The Sea Venture was the flagship of a nine-vessel resupply fleet bound for the struggling Jamestown colony when it was deliberately run aground on Bermuda's reefs during a hurricane in July 1609. All 150 passengers and crew survived, spent ten months on the island building two smaller vessels from Bermudian cedar, and eventually continued to Virginia — but the wreck effectively founded permanent settlement in Bermuda. William Strachey's account of the disaster is widely regarded as a primary source for Shakespeare's The Tempest.
The Bermuda Monetary Authority has returned to the Sea Venture subject repeatedly across gold issues, making die and finish variants worth cross-referencing against earlier KM listings before cataloging as singular.
