Antigua & Barbuda issued a series of gold foil novelty notes in 1981, timed to coincide with the islands' independence from Britain in November of that year. These pieces were never legal tender in any conventional sense — produced as collectibles and sold directly to collectors and tourists rather than circulated through banking channels. The "Popular sport fish" denomination belongs to a thematic subset within this series, with face values assigned arbitrarily rather than derived from any monetary policy consideration.

Gold foil construction makes these particularly vulnerable to creasing along fold lines, which becomes permanent. Flat, unhandled examples are the only ones worth serious attention.
