Obverse description Right-facing draped effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, after the portrait by Arnold Machin, wearing a tiara, her hair elegantly upswept. The legend COMMONWEALTH OF DOMINICA arcs along the upper periphery, with the date NOV. 3 to the lower left and 1978 to the lower right of the effigy, flanked by small pellets. The word INDEPENDENCE appears in large letters along the lower rim, commemorating the island's attainment of sovereignty.
