Gyanendra's reign was defined almost entirely by political crisis. He assumed the throne in 2001 following the royal massacre that killed nine members of the royal family, including King Birendra, and spent much of his rule in direct confrontation with a Maoist insurgency that had been grinding through the countryside since 1996. This export-year issue — struck in .500 silver for collector markets rather than circulation — appeared as that conflict was approaching its most acute phase.
