| Obverse description | Central device depicting the Sol de Mayo, a radiant sun with a human face rendered in high relief, with alternating straight and wavy rays emanating outward to fill the field. The circular legend REPUBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY arcs around the periphery in Latin capitals, flanked by small decorative star ornaments. The date 1869 appears in the lower exergue, also flanked by small floral ornaments. The whole is bordered by a continuous beaded inner rim. |

| Reverse description | A large numeral 4 occupies a recessed, horizontally engine-turned circular medallion at center, above which a curved banner inscribed CENTESIMOS arches across the upper portion of the medallion. The central device is framed by an open laurel and olive wreath tied at the base with a ribbon bow, with floral sprigs at the junctions. The engraver's signature TASSET appears in the lower right field, and the Paris mint mark A is placed at the bottom below the wreath. A beaded border runs around the entire reverse. |
