Yugoslavia's regular 4-dukat issue of 1931 was struck in gold for circulation, making this silver example a pattern or presentation piece — almost certainly produced at the Belgrade or Vienna mint for official approval or gifting purposes. Aleksandar I had dissolved parliament and declared a royal dictatorship in January 1929, and the coinage program of the early 1930s was closely tied to projecting monarchical authority under his personal rule. He was assassinated in Marseille in October 1934, leaving this short regal series with a hard terminus.
