| Reverse description | Central field displays a crowned castle of Castile in high relief, characteristic of early hammered coinage from the Mexico City Mint. The denomination numeral '4' appears prominently below the castle within the inner circle, flanked by pellet stops. A circular inner border separates the central device from the surrounding legend HISPANIARUM ET INDIARUM, proclaiming sovereignty over Spain and the Indies. The overall strike is typical of the irregular, somewhat crude hammered technique of mid-sixteenth century colonial copper coinage. |
