Obverse description The obverse bears the national arms of Ecuador centered in the field: an oval cartouche depicting Mount Chimborazo with a steamer on the river below, surmounted by a condor with spread wings perched atop the shield. The shield is flanked by fasces with Phrygian caps on either side and laurel and palm branches. The circumferential legend reads REPUBLICA DEL ECUADOR, with the mint name QUITO inscribed in the lower exergue. A toothed border runs along the entire rim.

Reverse description The reverse displays a left-facing draped bust of Liberty, her hair loosely arranged and adorned with a diadem or cap inscribed LIBERTAD. The portrait is rendered in a neoclassical style with fine detail to the hair and drapery at the truncation. The circumferential legend EL PODER EN LA CONSTITUCION arcs across the upper field, while the lower portion bears the fineness mark 0.666, the assayer initials GJ, and the date 1862 flanking a small star. A toothed border frames the entire design.
