Reverse description Two crowned Pillars of Hercules, representing the straits of Gibraltar, flanking the motto PLV·S on a scroll or band across the center, with small fleurs-de-lis or trefoils decorating the field between the pillars. A royal crown surmounts each pillar. The surrounding Latin legend, partially struck due to the irregular flan, references the sovereigns' dominion over Spain and the Indies. The design is characteristic of early colonial hammered coinage from the Santo Domingo mint.
