Reverse description The reverse of the host coin features a radiant Phrygian cap — a liberty cap — set upon a prominent sunburst of elongated rays emanating from a central hemisphere, occupying the majority of the field. The denomination '4' and assayer initials appear to the lower left, with the date '1869' inscribed along the lower margin alongside fineness and mint marks reading '4 Pl. 10D. 9Gs.' Applied prominently over the central sunburst is the Cuban countermark: a small, incuse key, punched in intaglio into the host coin's field, symbolizing the port of Havana and validating the coin for circulation in Cuba during 1872–1877.
