Reverse description A bold Greek cross with flared terminals divides the field into four quarters, each containing alternating castles of Castile and lions rampant of León, rendered in the rough but vigorous style typical of hammered cob coinage from Potosí. The cross is contained within a double tressure of arched compartments forming a quatrefoil frame. A partial Latin legend encircles the design within a beaded border, with the denomination numeral IV visible at the foot of the cross on some specimens. The irregular flan shape and partial strike are consistent with the macuquina (cob) production method of the period.
