| Obverse description | The obverse displays the quartered arms of Castile and León within an ornate shield, divided by a bold cross with castles (Castile) and lions (León) in alternating quarters. A circular Guatemalan Type II countermark, struck in intaglio with a radiate sun design, is applied to the right field of the host cob coin. The partial Latin legend HISPAR... is visible along the upper periphery within a beaded border, characteristic of Spanish colonial macuquina (cob) coinage. The irregular, flan shape and rough surfaces are consistent with hammered cob production, with the countermark punched to authenticate or revalue the coin for circulation in Guatemala circa 1839. |
