| Obverse description | A halved segment of a Mexican 8 Reales host coin bearing the official Tortola countermark struck at the cut edge. The surviving portion of the host coin's obverse displays a crowned royal arms shield encircled by a partial Latin legend denoting the King of Spain and the Indies, with the Mexico City mint mark and assayer initials visible in the field. The rectangular or oval countermark 'TORTOLA' is applied prominently, authenticating the piece for local currency circulation at 4 Shillings 1½ Pence. |
