| Obverse description | Central field dominated by a large Greek numeral M (mark of value, 40 nummi), rendered in a bold, angular style consistent with Byzantine follis prototypes. The M is flanked by short horizontal serifs and rests above a partial exergual line beneath which a series of pellets or a decorative base element is visible. Arabic legends appear in the surrounding field, partially legible due to die wear, reflecting the Umayyad practice of adapting Byzantine monetary iconography to Islamic coinage conventions. The overall design is crude and characteristic of transitional post-conquest imitative issues produced in the Bilad al-Sham region during the early Umayyad period. |
