| Obverse description | Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Anastasius I facing right, rendered in the late antique imperial portrait tradition. The diadem is of the jewelled type, and on some specimens a small cross appears above the front of the diadem, emphasising the emperor's Christian piety. The effigy occupies the central field, with the imperial titulature arranged as a surrounding legend. The portrait style is characteristic of early Byzantine coinage, with a frontal rigidity softened by the slight rightward turn of the bust. |
