Obverse lettering IOSEPHUS·I·D·G·P·ET·BRASILÆ·REX *X*L* ·1753·
(Translation: José I, by the Grace of God, King of Portugal and Brazil.)
Reverse description The reverse displays a boldly struck armillary sphere at center, its meridian band and parallels rendered in fine detail, symbolizing Portuguese maritime dominion and colonial authority. The sphere is depicted without a mintmark. A continuous circular legend surrounds the central device, separated from the sphere by the coin's rim. The design is characteristic of Brazilian colonial copper issues struck at the Lisbon Mint under José I, reflecting the Pombaline-era standardization of colonial currency.
