| Obverse description | The obverse is executed in intaglio, centered on a large allegorical vignette of an eagle with spread wings perched upon a fasces entwined with foliage, rays of light emanating from behind in a sunburst composition. The bold letterpress heading reads RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE, with the denomination "Assignat de quatre cents livres" inscribed in elegant script across the central field. The border is composed of ornate guilloche panels with the denomination "400" repeated at each corner, flanked by the series and number references; the engravers' credits GATTEAUX INV. and TARDIEU SCULP. appear at the lower margin. |
