Bulgaria's wartime alliance with Germany had direct consequences for its banknote production. By 1943, with domestic printing capacity insufficient for higher denominations, the Balgarska Narodna Banka contracted the Reichsdruckerei in Berlin — the same facility producing currency for the Reich and several occupied territories simultaneously. The political intimacy this implies was largely practical; Bulgaria had joined the Axis in 1941 primarily to secure territorial gains in Macedonia and Thrace, not out of ideological conviction.
Pick 67A is distinguished from the related 67 by signature combination. Circulation was brief — Bulgaria's postwar communist government undertook a currency reform in 1947 that invalidated and recalled the wartime series.
