The Estado de Buenos Ayres was a separate political entity from the Argentine Confederation between 1852 and 1861, following Urquiza's defeat of Rosas at Caseros and Buenos Aires's subsequent secession from the newly formed confederation. This note was issued during that period of formal separation, when the province operated its own treasury, customs revenue, and monetary system entirely independent of the national government sitting in Paraná.
The PS prefix in the Pick numbering places it among provisional and state issues — a reminder that the political legitimacy of the issuer was itself contested at the time of printing.
