Romania's 1867 coinage patterns were produced as the newly installed Hohenzollern prince Carol I was establishing the country's first modern monetary system, with multiple competing compositions and denominations tested before the final series was confirmed. This nickel trial was never adopted — Romania settled on copper for the circulating 5 Bani, leaving pattern pieces like this as the only physical record of the alternatives considered.
