Nicaragua's first national coinage series, introduced in 1878, replaced the chaotic patchwork of Central American and foreign coins that had circulated since independence. The 1880 issue was struck at the Philadelphia Mint under contract — Nicaragua lacked domestic minting capacity entirely during this period. Production volumes were modest, and the series was short-lived; a monetary reform in the following decade overhauled the coinage before these small silver pieces had achieved wide circulation.
