Honoré V ruled Monaco under French suzerainty, and his coinage program of the late 1830s was a calculated assertion of dynastic authority during a period when the Grimaldi family's hold on the principality was economically fragile — Monaco would not fully stabilize its finances until the casino revenues of the following decades. The small-head variety, distinguished from KM#95.1 by the reduced portrait die, reflects a mid-run modification typical of this brief two-year issue.
