Cambodia's 1860 coinage was struck in Paris under French protectorate pressure — France had formalized its grip on the kingdom just three years later in 1863, but monetary reform arrived ahead of the political paperwork. These pieces were produced at the Monnaie de Paris for Norodom I, who had taken the throne in 1860 amid a succession dispute that France ultimately helped resolve in his favor. The relationship was transactional from the start.
The X# prefix in standard references signals token or pattern status — this issue sits outside the regular crown series, suggesting limited or ceremonial distribution rather than mainstream circulation.
