Doctor Andreu was a well-known pharmaceutical brand in Barcelona, and during the Civil War the workers at its factory — collectivized under anarcho-syndicalist control after July 1936 — issued their own fractional currency to keep wages and internal transactions moving when small coin had effectively vanished from circulation. Thousands of Spanish enterprises, collectives, and municipalities did the same; the result was a chaotic but functioning parallel economy running alongside the Republic's official issues.

The card stock construction was deliberate — thicker material resisted rapid wear in the hands of factory workers and held up better in pocket circulation than standard banknote paper.
