La Fraternitat Obrera was a workers' cooperative in Premià de Mar, a small coastal town north of Barcelona. Like hundreds of similar entities across Catalonia, it began issuing its own small-denomination paper currency during the Civil War after the Republican government's coin supply collapsed entirely in 1936. Copper and silver had vanished — hoarded, melted, or simply absent — and local bodies of every description stepped in to fill the gap.
These emergency vales circulated exclusively within the cooperative's membership network. Outside that community, they were worthless paper.
