| Obverse description | Central round hole pierces the field, flanked on either side by a pair of sinuous decorative scrolls or vine-like tendril motifs in low relief, a design attributed to engraver George Kruger Gray. The numeral '5' appears prominently above the hole at the top of the inner field. The legend 'SENTI TANO' is inscribed vertically along the left margin and 'FIVE CENTS' vertically along the right margin, both in raised Latin capitals. The issuer name 'EAST AFRICA' is boldly lettered in two lines below the central hole. The entire design is framed by a continuous beaded border running along the rim. |
