Sierra Leone's decimal coinage was introduced in 1964 following independence, replacing the British West African currency board issues. The Bank of Sierra Leone managed the transition, but by the early 1980s the country was experiencing significant economic deterioration under the Siaka Stevens government, with inflation eroding the leone's purchasing power steadily throughout the series' production run.
