Zimbabwe's coinage program launched in 1980 coincided with independence from Rhodesia, requiring an entirely new monetary identity almost overnight. The Reserve Bank contracted the Royal Mint to produce the first issues while domestic infrastructure was established.
By the late 1990s, the early signs of the inflation that would eventually destroy the currency entirely were already visible in fiscal policy, though circulating coinage still functioned normally through the end of this series' run in 1999.
