The Catawba Indian Nation, based in South Carolina, received federal recognition in 1993 after a decades-long legal dispute that included a landmark land claim against the state. The Native American Mint produces privately issued fantasy tokens of this type — they carry no legal tender status and are not authorized by any tribal government.
