The design, by David Thomas, draws on Melanesian artistic heritage to create a distinctive national emblem. |

The Solomon Islands Monetary Authority issued this series beginning in 1977, two years after the islands' currency was decoupled from the Australian dollar with the introduction of the Solomon Islands dollar. Independence followed in 1978, meaning early dates in this run were struck under British sovereignty while later dates were not — a distinction the KM number alone obscures.
