KM#51a marks the switch from cupro-nickel to nickel-plated steel for this denomination — a cost-cutting measure Fiji adopted in common with dozens of Pacific and Commonwealth nations as base metal prices climbed through the late 1980s. The plated steel version is non-magnetic only in the loosest sense; a strong magnet will catch it.
The 3rd portrait by Raphael Maklouf was introduced across Commonwealth coinage from 1985 onward, reaching Fiji's circulation stock on a slight delay.
