Kananaskis internment camp, located in the Bow Valley west of Calgary, held German prisoners of war during the Second World War. Like several Canadian PoW facilities, it operated an internal scrip system to allow prisoners to make purchases within the camp without access to Canadian currency — a measure that also prevented escape funds from accumulating.

The scrip was printed on-site, which accounts for its crude production quality. Forgery by inmates was a known concern across the Canadian PoW scrip program generally, though Kananaskis examples show no documented systematic counterfeiting on the scale seen at some other camps.
