Pioneer Petroleums operated a chain of gas stations and convenience stores across Ontario, and loyalty scrip of this kind — redeemable in-store rather than at the pump — was a common promotional tool among Canadian independents trying to compete against the integrated majors in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The barcode made redemption trackable at point of sale, which was a meaningful operational upgrade over earlier punch-card or coupon schemes.
Pioneer was acquired by Sunoco in 2008, at which point outstanding scrip became worthless.
