Rona was a hardware cooperative headquartered in Boucherville, and this scrip note was issued for internal use — most likely for employee transactions at a company store or canteen rather than as a broad public currency substitute. Corporate scrip of this kind was not unusual in Quebec through the early 1980s, particularly among large cooperative enterprises managing their own retail and distribution networks. The legal grey area surrounding such instruments was rarely tested, and most issuers simply discontinued them quietly as the practice fell out of favour.
