The Société Française des Charbonnages du Tonkin was the dominant coal-mining operation in French Indochina, extracting from the Hồng Gai coalfields in what is now northeastern Vietnam. Like many large colonial enterprises operating far from metropolitan banking infrastructure, the company issued its own fractional scrip to facilitate wage payments and canteen purchases among its workforce — a common but poorly documented practice in industrial concessions of that period.

Company scrip of this type rarely survived in any quantity. It was purpose-built for internal circulation and had no value outside the concession.
