Reverse description Central motif depicts a boom, a traditional Arabian dhow-type sailing vessel, shown in profile sailing to the left under full sail, with a small flag flying from a spar on the right side. Below the ship, two dates are inscribed in Arabic numerals: the Islamic Hijri year ١٣٨٠ (1380 AH) and the Gregorian year ١٩٦١ (1961 CE), separated by a dash, occupying the lower field. The composition evokes Kuwait's historic maritime and pearl-diving heritage.

Additional information

Kuwait's first gold coin issue, struck to commemorate independence from Britain in June 1961 — an independence that was almost immediately tested when Iraq's General Qasim declared Kuwait part of Iraqi territory within days of the announcement, forcing a British military return and a tense standoff that lasted months. The coin was produced in very limited quantities, making it among the rarest of all Gulf state inaugural issues.
