Obverse description The obverse is dominated by the bold letterpress title MERCHANTS BANK OF CANADA across the top, beneath the DOMINION OF CANADA legend, with a central pastoral vignette of figures working along a riverside with a boat and wooded shoreline in fine intaglio engraving. Two oval portrait vignettes flank the central scene — a gentleman with a moustache at left and a distinguished elder statesman at right — each set within intricate guilloche borders. The denomination FIVE DOLLARS and the numeral 5 appear at the corners, with the date MONTREAL, 3RD JANUARY, 1917 and the inscription CHARTERED BY ACT OF PARLIAMENT printed in the lower portion.

Reverse description The reverse is printed entirely in green, with a highly ornate guilloche underprint filling the entire field, divided into three panels separated by elaborate lathe-work borders. The left and right panels each contain a large stylized numeral 5 within a foliate cartouche, while the central panel bears the bank's heraldic coat of arms within a circular medallion surrounded by intricate engine-turned geometric patterns. The bank name THE MERCHANTS BANK OF CANADA is inscribed along the lower margin, with the numeral 5 repeated at all four corners.
