Comments

Molsons Bank was one of Canada's longer-lived chartered banks, operating from 1855 until its absorption into the Bank of Montreal in 1925 — one of the last consolidations of the era when dozens of private chartered banks still issued their own currency legally under the Bank Act. This 1918 note was printed by the American Bank Note Company's Ottawa plant, which had been established specifically to handle Canadian chartered bank work after wartime restrictions made transporting currency plates and finished notes across the border impractical.

The signatures of W.M. Macpherson as Cashier and H. Dyde represent the final years of Molsons' independent note-issuing authority. Redemption of outstanding chartered bank notes was managed through the Canadian Bankers' Association after merger, and unredeemed Molsons notes remained legal tender for a fixed transitional period.
