Additional information

Tuvalu gained full independence from Britain in 1978, but this coin predates that — issued in 1976 when the islands were still a British dependency in the process of separating administratively from the Gilbert Islands. The 5 Dollar denomination was unusually large for a Pacific microstate with a population under 10,000 and no domestic silver production whatsoever; these were struck for international collectors rather than local commerce.
