Galaxy Express 999 is the 1977 manga series by Leiji Matsumoto, later adapted into a celebrated anime film in 1979 — a story about a boy traveling the galaxy aboard a steam locomotive-styled space train. Tuvalu's licensing arrangement with Japanese pop-culture properties during the 2000s produced a steady run of large-format silver issues aimed squarely at the collector and anime fan markets, with virtually no expectation of circulation.
The 5-ounce format was a deliberate choice for this series, giving the die engravers surface area sufficient for the kind of detailed imagery Matsumoto's aesthetic demands.
