The San Antonio was a Spanish galleon that wrecked off Bermuda's coast in 1621, and this issue belongs to Bermuda's ongoing series commemorating the historic shipwrecks that both plagued and defined the island's early colonial history. Bermuda's treacherous reefs, responsible for hundreds of wrecks over four centuries, paradoxically helped establish the colony — the 1609 wreck of the Sea Venture stranded settlers who would otherwise have sailed on to Virginia and likely perished there.
At 155.52 grams, this is a five-ounce piece, part of a format Bermuda favored for prestige issues in the late 1980s rather than for any circulatory purpose.
