Reverse description Central field displays the heraldic shield of Deutsch-Ostafrika (German East Africa), bearing a Prussian eagle in chief and a lion's head in base, topped by a ribbon scroll inscribed DEUTSCH-OSTAFRIKA. To the lower left of the shield is a facing bust of a male figure, and to the lower right a circular medallion bearing the Imperial German double-headed eagle. The entire central composition is framed by an open laurel wreath. The peripheral legend EAST AFRICA - GERMAN COLONY 1885 - 1919 arcs along the upper field, while the denomination FIVE DOLLARS is inscribed along the lower border.
