| Obverse description | Large numeral '5' dominates the central field, rendered in bold modern lettering. The denomination legend ΔΡΑΧΜΕΣ (Drachmes) is inscribed below the numeral in the same contemporary sans-serif typeface characteristic of this 'new lettering' issue. The circular legend ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ (Hellenic Republic) runs along the upper periphery, while the date flanked by two bullet points is positioned in the lower exergue area. |

The "new lettering" designation distinguishes this from the earlier KM#130 issue, where the Greek text was revised mid-series — a quiet administrative correction rather than a reissue prompted by any political event. These circulated heavily through the 1980s and 1990s alongside Greece's turbulent monetary negotiations leading up to euro convergence, ultimately rendered obsolete when the drachma was permanently replaced on 1 January 2002 after nearly 2,700 years of intermittent use as a monetary unit. The final drachma-era coins were demonetized with almost no transitional float period.
