| Obverse description | The field is divided into two hemispheres by a continuous horizontal line. The upper-left hemisphere features a ring of twelve five-pointed stars following the inner border, referencing the European Union motif. The lower-right hemisphere displays the three lions passant from the coat of arms of Estonia. The date 2004 and the country name EESTI appear as legends within the design. Estonia's euro changeover didn't happen until 2011, but the Bank of Estonia was required to submit trial strikes — proofs in the technical sense of test pieces, not collector proofs — to the European Central Bank for design approval well in advance. These Probe/Essai/Proov pieces from 2004 were part of that approval process and were never released into circulation. The multilingual labeling on these pieces reflects the ECB's requirement that trial coins be marked to prevent them entering monetary circulation in non-eurozone states.
