Additional information

Estonia's euro changeover didn't happen until 2011, but the Bank of Estonia was required to submit trial strikes — proofs in the technical sense of test pieces, not collector proofs — to the European Central Bank for design approval well in advance. These Probe/Essai/Proov pieces from 2004 were part of that approval process and were never released into circulation. The multilingual labeling on these pieces reflects the ECB's requirement that trial coins be marked to prevent them entering monetary circulation in non-eurozone states.
