Kuwait's first coinage series, issued in 1961, appeared the same year the country formally terminated its 1899 protectorate agreement with Britain and declared full independence. The fils denominations were introduced through the newly established Kuwait Currency Board — a transitional authority that predated the Central Bank of Kuwait by nearly a decade.
The 1961 date makes this a first-year issue from a state that had existed, in its modern form, for only months.
