Bassas da India is an uninhabited French territory in the Mozambique Channel — a submerged atoll for much of the tidal cycle, with no permanent population, no economy, and no administrative infrastructure of its own. It has never required a circulating currency. Coins issued under its name are produced entirely for the collector market, authorized through French territorial jurisdiction as a licensing mechanism.
