Additional information

Monaco's franc-denominated coinage survived well into the euro transition period, but Rainier III's relationship with French monetary policy was never purely passive. Under the 1963 Franco-Monegasque monetary convention, Monaco retained the right to mint coins bearing its own effigy while remaining locked to the French franc at parity — a compromise that suited Paris as long as mintages stayed modest. This 5 franc piece was struck across a 25-year window, making it one of the longer-running single-type issues of Rainier's reign.

Circulation examples are common; collector-grade specimens less so, given that Monaco's tourist economy meant many pieces left the principality as souvenirs rather than returning to circulation channels.
