Albania's 1926 coinage program was developed under Italian supervision — Zog I had signed the Treaty of Tirana that year, effectively binding the country's finances and military to Rome. This brass pattern for the 5 Franga Ari was struck at the Rome Mint as part of that initial series of trials, almost certainly never intended for circulation. The production metal itself signals its pattern status; the issued 5 Franga Ari would be struck in silver.
