Comments

The Privilegirte Oesterreichische National-Bank was itself a product of Austria's catastrophic state bankruptcy of 1811, when the Viennese currency was devalued to one-fifth its face value under the Finanzpatent. The institution rebuilt public confidence slowly through the 1820s, and by 1833 was issuing notes of this denomination under considerably tighter fiscal discipline than its predecessors had managed.

The A68 designation places this among the earlier documented issues of the series, and survivorship is poor — paper of this period was not archival quality, and Austrian banking notes from the 1830s saw hard use in commerce before any thought of preservation.
