Obverse description Red letterpress on white paper, the note is laid out in a purely typographic format without pictorial vignettes. The face is framed by a red guilloche border of repeated diamond and scroll ornaments, with the denomination numeral '5' in each corner. A text panel at upper left states the acceptance of value by the Nederlandsche Bank under the law of 18 December 1845, flanked by a circular watermark impression at centre left. The large central inscription 'MUNT- BILJET' in bold display type dominates the upper half, below which the full statutory text is set in a mixture of roman, italic, and blackletter typefaces, concluding with the place and date ''s Gravenhage 1 Januarij 1846' and a space for manuscript signatures of the Registrar and the Minister of Finance.
